March 9, 2010 Special Election

On Tuesday, March 9, 2010, a special election will be held in the Sahuarita Unified School District of Pima County, Arizona. Registered voters will have the opportunity to help decide important financial matters for the school district.

The ballot issue is:

PROPOSITION #402
The continuation of the Maintenance and Operations Budget Override

The proposed override would represent a continuation of the existing override approved by voters in November 2004, which is scheduled to phase down by one-third for fiscal year 2010-2011 if the continuation is not approved.


The renewal of the override is NOT a request for new programs or funding, rather it is to CONTINUE programs currently offered by the District.


Voter approval will ensure the following:

  • Athletics
  • Career/Technology Education
  • School Counselors at each school
  • Music Specialists at every school
  • Fine Arts
  • Physical Eduation
  • Facilities and Operations
  • NJROTC
  • Instructional Aides
  • Security/Monitors

About Proposition 402 (Override)

The override is a continuation of a tax you are already paying and has been supported since 1980.

If it is not passed, the school district will have to cut $763,630 from its general Maintenance and Operation.

Valuable educational programs supported by the override:

- Athletics
- Career & Technical Education
- School counselors at each school
- Music specialists & programs at every school
- Fine Arts
- K-12 physical education programs
- Naval JROTC program
- Instructional Aides
- Security personnel/monitors
- Extra curricular activities


The assessment is $13.59 per month for a home valued at $157,560.

This money directly targets educational programs that support students.

This is NOT to increase current teacher and staff salaries.
